Artist/Activist: Lunchtime Conversations with Anu Yadav and Joshua Davis

Anu Yadav is a critically acclaimed actress, writer and theaterbased educator dedicated to telling the stories of people pushed to the margins of public discourse. As a solo performer, Anu shapeshifts into characters from everyday life with both humor and drama. Her devised theater work sparks a powerful forum for people to reflect and listen to each other’s stories across social and economic divides. As an actress, Yadav has performed with the Shakespeare Theatre Company, Imagination Stage, Theatre Alliance, and African Continuum Theatre, Smithsonian Folklife Festival, Strathmore Mansion and the National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts in Beijing. She is a seasoned teaching artist, cofounded the storytelling project Classlines and was featured in the documentaries Walk with Me and Chocolate City. She was a 2014 DC Artist Fellow, Western Arts Alliance Launchpad Artist, and holds an M.F.A. in Performance from the University of Maryland at College Park. She will be touring her solo play Meena’s Dream this fall to Phoenix, Washington State and Lake Tahoe. www.anuyadav.com.
Joshua Davis is the Executive Director of Groundworks Collaborative, having begun his journey with the organization as a volunteer – cooking the Thursday night Community Meal. Josh’s leadership was key to the recent merger of Morningside Shelter with The Brattleboro Area Drop In Center; The two long standing Brattleboro organizations merged to for Groundworks Collaborative. Groundworks provides housing and support to individuals and families experiences food and housing insecurity. Among his recent achievements is Josh’s appointment to the Governor’s Council on Pathways from Poverty – a threeyear mandate from Governor Peter Shumlin to review and make recommendations on federal, state, and local government actions to respond to poverty in Vermont. Josh is also an active participant in our local Continuum of Care group, which statewide makes up the Vermont Coalition to End Homelessness. Josh and his family relocated to Brattleboro in 2008 so he could attend the SIT Graduate Institute, where he obtained a Master of Arts in Sustainable Development degree. Prior to their time in Vermont, Josh and his wife Tara served as Peace Corps Volunteers in Namibia, and then taught English for two years in Japan. Josh has also spent time working with multiethnic peace building organizations in Kosovo. Josh is a committed leader for lasting social change, focused on removing barriers to success to achieve affordable housing as a right for all in our community.
GROUNDWORKS was established in 2015 following the merger of the Brattleboro Area Drop In Center and Morningside Shelter. They provide ongoing support to families and individuals facing housing and food insecurities in the greater Brattleboro, Vermont area.
